CMT Readers Club: Stories that See EveryBody

A National Disability-Inclusive Storytelling Program for Schools

Launched by the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation (HNF) and the CMT Dream Team, the CMT Readers Club is a joyful, nationwide movement designed to spark empathy, foster inclusion, and raise awareness about disabilities like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).

Through the power of storytelling, real-life advocates bring disability-inclusive books into classrooms—helping kids see difference in a positive light and shaping the next generation of allies and changemakers.

Why the Readers Club Matters

Most children rarely encounter disability stories in their school curriculum. The CMT Readers Club changes that by:

💬 Creating safe, meaningful dialogue about disability in the classroom

💡 Encouraging curiosity, empathy, and understanding

📚 Adding inclusive books to school libraries

🌍 Amplifying voices of people living with CMT and other disabilities

💙 Raising funds for research, support, and advocacy through HNF

When kids meet real people with disabilities—through story, conversation, and heart—it changes everything.

How It Works

For Schools:

  • Request a visit using our online form
  • Receive a curated children’s book from our inclusive reading list
  • Welcome a trained CMT Readers Club volunteer (virtually or in person)
  • Share classroom reflections and photos with HNF

For Readers & Advocates:

  • Complete our signup form & download the school outreach email template
  • Join a brief intro and training call with HNF
  • Receive your book, talking points, and activity guide
  • Visit a classroom (virtual or in-person) to read and lead discussion
  • Share photos, reflections, and optionally launch a small fundraiser to support CMT research

Every visit is an opportunity to inspire kids—and to grow awareness for CMT across the country.

Included Resources

Readers and schools receive:

  • A disability-inclusive children’s book from HNF’s pre-approved list
  • A discussion guide tailored by age group
  • Worksheets and take-home activities
  • Outreach email templates for schools
  • A simple guide for starting an awareness fundraiser

Age-Appropriate Activities

We’ve designed activities for different grade levels so every child can engage:

  • Grades K–2 Coloring pages, “Same & Different” picture sort, and kindness clouds
  • Grades 3–5 → Disability awareness crossword, empathy reflection sheets, and myth-busting games
  • Grades 6–8 → Accessibility audits, disability-in-media analysis, and creative reflection projects

Be Part of the Story

Together with HNF and the Dream Team, we can build a future where every child learns that disability is not something to fear or pity, but a beautiful part of the human experience.
