ENCell’s EN001 Enters Phase 2a Trials for CMT1A

A South Korean biotech company called ENCell just gave the first patient a dose of an experimental CMT treatment called EN001, kicking off a Phase 2a clinical trial. This is a big step forward: earlier trials focused on making sure the drug was safe, and now researchers are testing whether it actually works, and at what dose.

The trial will enroll 21 patients across three major hospitals in Korea. Some will get a low dose, some a high dose, and some a placebo, so the researchers can see which dose performs best compared to no treatment. They’ll track results over 24 weeks using the CMT neuropathy score.

EN001 is a stem cell therapy made from umbilical cord cells. It’s designed to help regrow the protective myelin sheath around damaged nerves, which is what breaks down in CMT1A. Right now, there is no approved treatment that addresses the root cause of CMT. If this trial goes well, the company hopes to pursue early commercial approval.
